History
Two courses are offered. Your teacher will advise you on the most suitable for you.
a) G.C.S.E. History - AQA Specification B - Modern World History
This two year course extends many of the topics covered in Year 9, offering an insight into how Europe and the main world powers have developed during the twentieth century. New topics include a detailed study of Cold War conflict, together with in-depth studies of America and Russia. Whilst conflict during war is considered, the social and political conflict which took place in America and Russia are also investigated; e.g. social conflict in America during the boom of the 1920's (the jazz age, speakeasies, Al Capone etc) and the depression of the 1930's; political conflict in Russia from the revolution in 1917, through the growth of Communism to 1941.
Coursework on the conflict in Vietnam will also be covered, including a study of how Hollywood and the movies portrayed the conflict and its results. There is also a piece of coursework on evacuation during World War II. This accounts for 25% of the final exam work.
How Will the Course be Assessed?
Together with the coursework, course assessment takes place by means of 2 examination papers, accounting for 75% of the overall mark :
- Paper 1 : World War One, World War Two and the Cold War
- Paper 2 : Russia and America
The coursework unit on Evacuation and Vietnam is a taught module, with assignments completed in class.
